Emanuel doesn't see need to take over big banks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel says he doesn't think the Obama administration will have to step in and temporarily take charge of some big national banks.

He says bank nationalization is not an administration goal and it is not a good policy objective.

Federal regulators soon will announce how the nation's 19 largest banks performed on tests to determine their ability to withstand worsening economic conditions.

The tests subject banks' balance sheets to scenarios that include rising job losses and declining home prices.
