You wonder why Bush jumped hoops to provide assistance in Minnesota?

<--The 2008 Republican National Convention will take place at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota from September 1 until September 4, 2008.

From Yahoo News:

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said Thursday that structural deficiencies were found two years ago in the highway bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis, and it was the state's responsibility to fix them. Congress began working on a $250 million package of federal assistance.

Bush said the federal government would help rebuild the bridge in the city that will host next year's Republican National Convention.

"We in the federal government must respond, and respond robustly, to help the people there not only recover, but to make sure that lifeline of activity — that bridge — gets rebuilt as quickly as possible," Bush said after a Cabinet meeting.

Still stung by harsh criticism of the government's sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina, Bush talked with state and local officials in Minnesota, and the administration dispatched officials to the scene.

The White House said an inspection two years ago found structural deficiencies in the 40-year-old highway bridge that buckled during evening rush hour Wednesday.

And look how fast Minnesota received assistance in comparison to the Katrina victims.

Well I'm glad the White House and FEMA acted quickly this time. They didn't wait 5 days for thousands of people to die before showing up. Oh yes and the money came within 24 hours. This is an example of how fast our White House can move when there is a disaster and now we know why it didn't happen during the Katrina Storm. People pay taxes for cases like this but in the case of the Katrina victims they just don't get the help when needed. They have to look for helpful Americans and foreign aide to support them in a disaster.

Sure--there's totally going to be lawsuits about this bridge. Was it a city road, a state road, or a federal road? We'll find out when the lawsuits start hitting the fan. Although there were issues for the levees breaking in N.O., for the rest of the Katrina damage, who can sue Mother Nature? Somebody dropped the ball on this bridge, so the faster FEMA moves, the less it will cost in lawsuits if people can take their anger down a notch.
