Fresh Details on Iran-US Talks over Iraq

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- An informed source privy to the talks between Iran and the US over Iraq provided FNA with some untold information about the meeting.

The source who preferred to remain anonymous said that the American team of negotiators strove to keep the meeting cool in order for the talks to continue.

The source said, "According to the agenda of the meeting, talks were scheduled to focus on Iraq, but the American side expected the Iranian team to divert the agenda and raise its demands. Yet, Iranian negotiators did not do so and just focused on the premeditated framework."

"The Iranian team of negotiators believed that presence of the occupying troops, occupiers' disrespect for Iraq's Constitution and religious beliefs of the Muslim Iraqi people, undermining of Nuri al-Maliki's administration by the occupiers, the slackened trend of the reconstruction of infrastructural installations and facilities in Iraq, pushing the Iraqi police and army to the margin in security issues and affairs, lack of equipment and training of the Iraqi police and security forces were the main roots of the insecurities in Iraq," he added.

The source said that the talks which took four hours included three short breaks for the two teams to consult their capitals.

"At some stages, the US team strove to divert talks from the agenda to other issues, but all such efforts remained fruitless due to the vigilance of the Iranian side," he continued. He said that the American team was worried about Iran's participation in the talks because Tehran had specified cancellation of military war games in the region as a prerequisite for talks with the US. More on the story.
