In emails, California councilman joked about assassinating Obama

In trouble again...

The Merced Sun-Star says it has obtained 200 more emails sent by City Councilman Gary Frago, in which the elected official jokes about violence against black and Latino people, and even envisions a scenario in which the man who attempted to kill Ronald Reagan is enticed to assassinate President Barack Obama.

From the Merced Sun-Star:

One of the most troubling of the new Frago e-mails, forwarded in January, joked that Nokia had designed a new cell phone for "nervous white people" who want to make calls in a series of cities known for their large black populations, such as Oakland and New Orleans. The phone was a gun.

Another e-mail forwarded by Frago on Dec. 9, 2008, was in the form of a fictitious letter sent by Sen. John McCain to John Hinckley Jr., a man obsessed with actress Jodie Foster, who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. The letter said that Hinckley would be released soon and he should know that Obama was sleeping with Foster now.

Frago first came to national attention last month, when seven emails from the city councilor were made public. One of those emails read: "Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic."

"Now critics are renewing their calls for Frago to step down from the Atwater council," KFSN reported.

The station reports:

Some of the emails refer to violence against President Obama, his delegates, as well illegal immigrants. Another involves a made up conversation between Oprah Winfrey and George Burns that makes an offensive remark about African American women.

Councilman Frago has apologized for forwarding the emails and on Monday night he resigned as mayor pro tem. But many people have said that's not good enough. They also want him to give up his city council seat, and they say the volume of racially offensive emails only makes them more certain he should step down.

Read on.
