Barack Obama has finally made it official: Julius Genachowski is his pick to become chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. After months of speculation and media reports that Genachowski was headed for the top FCC job, Obama announced this afternoon that he has, indeed, nominated Genachowski for the role.
During his presidential campaign, Genachowski served as Obama’s top technology adviser. Obama and Genachowski attended Harvard Law School together. They both worked for the Harvard Law Review, with Obama as the Review’s president and Genachowski as a co-notes editor.
But unlike Obama, who famously rejected the path to a prestigious Supreme Court clerkship, Genachowski took two high court clerkships with Justices David Souter and William Brennan Jr.
Obama also nominated John Berry today to be director of the Office of Personnel Management. Berry most recently headed up the effort to revamp the National Zoo. If confirmed, he will become the country’s highest-ranking openly gay public official.
