Iraqi VP: U.S., Iraq won't reach accord on troops this year Time's running out for reaching a security agreement with the U.S., and an accord is unlikely before the end of this year, Iraq's Sunni Muslim vice president said Monday. The United Nations mandate that authorizes the U.S. military presence in Iraq will expire on Dec. 31 and without a so-called status of forces agreement, it's questionable whether the U.S. will have a legitimate right to maintain its troops in Iraq, Vice President Tariq al Hashimi told McClatchy.

Iran protests American troops' behavior toward pilgrims --U.S. forces are inspecting all people between the ages of 18 and 40, taking finger prints and eye scans. Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization on Monday voiced protest against the American troops' insulting behavior towards Iranian pilgrims in Iraq. Deputy Head of the Organization for holy sites affairs Hossein Akbar told a press conference in Baghdad on Monday that the U.S. forces' act of having Iranian pilgrims fingerprinted and giving eye tests along Iraqi borders is illegal, unconventional and in contradiction with current Tehran-Baghdad accords.

Friendly fire in Iraq -- and a coverup --The Army says no, but a graphic video and eyewitness testimony indicate that a U.S. tank killed two American soldiers. The mother of one soldier demands answers. By Mark Benjamin Salon has obtained evidence -- including a graphic, 52-and-a-half minute video -- suggesting that friendly fire from an American tank killed two U.S. soldiers in Ramadi, Iraq, in late 2006, and that the Army ignored the video and other persuasive data in order to rule that the deaths were due to enemy action.

Iraqi government in biggest ever sale of oil assets The Iraqi government is to sell the rights to recover 40 billion barrels of oil in the biggest ever sale of reserves. BP, Shell and ExxonMobil are all expected to attend a meeting at the Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair with the Iraqi oil minister, Hussein al-Shahristani for the first round of bidding for new contracts. It is the first time since the 2003 US-led invasion that the contracts have been released.

Democrats accused of trying to steal election [lol] An elder statesman of the Republican party cast doubt about the legitimacy of the presidential election yesterday - three weeks before Americans go to the polls - by declaring the process was already "tainted" by voter fraud. The assertion from John Danforth, a former Missouri senator and ambassador to the UN, dramatically escalates charges by the John McCain camp that Barack Obama and the community organisation Acorn are trying to steal the election by bringing new voters into the electoral system.

Judge: Mich. can't reject voters with bad address A judge has ordered Michigan election officials to stop automatically canceling a voter's registration if the card is returned as undeliverable. Federal Judge Stephen Murphy in Detroit ruled Monday in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and a group representing college students. More than 1,400 voters in that category have been disqualified so far in 2008.

RNC eyes $5M bailout for GOP senators The Republican National Committee, growing nervous over the prospect of Democrats’ winning a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, is considering tapping into a $5 million line of credit this week to aid an increasing number of vulnerable incumbents, top Republicans say. With party strategists fearing a bloodbath at the polls, GOP officials are shifting to triage mode, determining who can be saved and where to best spend their money.
