Streisand to Lend Pipes to Obama’s Cause
Barack Obama will get the star treatment from Hollywood denizens (or is it the other way around?) once more before the election, at a two-part fundraising extravaganza on Sept. 16. First, Obama will join hosts Steven Spielberg and his DreamWorks co-moguls Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen for an intimate dinner at Beverly Hills’ Greystone Mansion (cost per person: $28,500), and the second will include a performance by songstress Barbra Streisand at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel (a steal at just $2,500!). From
Variety’s “Wilshire & Washington” blog:

Streisand endorsed Obama after he secured the nomination in June. She had endorsed Hillary Clinton in the primary, and appeared and spoke at a fund-raiser for her in January. She also sang at a concert for John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000. The timing of this Obama visit is giving new meaning to the words, “quick turnaround,” as organizers have just eight days to put the fetes together. On her Website, Streisand chimed in last week on John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin, writing, “We are not that stupid.”

The Politico

John Bitney, who grew up in Wasilla with Palin, told the paper cum website:
I wanted to stay with the governor and support the governor -- we're talking about someone who's been a friend for 30 years -- but I understood it, and I have no ax to grind over the whole thing."

Farce of the airline bomb plot trial: Jury hit by holidays, sickness and golf ball injuries A series of bizarre delays hit the jury deliberations in the Heathrow bombs plot trial, it was revealed today. The eight men and four women were charged with reaching verdicts on eight British Muslim men accused of trying to kill thousands of passengers with liquid bombs smuggled on planes flying from London to North America. The jury was unable to decide on the jets blitz allegation after being sent out by the judge, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith, five weeks ago. They deliberated for only 56 hours during that time - their discussions halted by a two-week holiday, sickness and breaks for other reasons. One juror kept hospital appointments after he hurt his foot stepping on a golf ball.
