The day before Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was introduced as Sen. John McCain's running mate, she asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican political ally, to veto legislation that would impose a fee on shipping containers processed at California's major ports to fund pollution mitigation.
Palin, with Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, also a Republican, argued that shipping costs have increased significantly and that the rising price of fuel and higher fees that would be imposed at the Ports of Oakland, Los Angeles and Long Beach would be passed to residents of Alaska and Hawaii. Those states receive almost all goods via cargo vessels.
Palin's interest in the legislation, which was being printed Thursday and is en route to Schwarzenegger's desk, gives it added meaning as she has become the Republican nominee for vice president. Environmentalists who endorsed the legislation assailed Palin, saying worsening pollution is posing significant health risks.
