An adviser to Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers said FBI agents asked him in early June to cooperate with their investigation into possible City Hall corruption.

Sam Riddle, a political consultant who worked as Conyers’ chief of staff after she was elected in 2005, said Monday that agents also told his attorney they had been tapping Riddle’s cell phone for the past year.

“After leaving that interview, I became firmly convinced there are council people that are clearly targeted,” he said, adding of Conyers: “I believe they’re looking at her real hard.”

Riddle said he has not seen Conyers do anything illegal.
Conyers has been out of the public spotlight in recent days, reportedly recovering from a medical procedure.

Riddle, who said he is no longer on Conyers’ staff, said he spoke with FBI agents for an hour in their downtown offices on June 6.

Riddle said investigators asked to meet with him a second time, but he declined.

He said his lawyer met with them last week.

Riddle said he also learned from his lawyer that agents reviewed his bank accounts.

He said he answered investigators’ questions. He said he has done nothing wrong, but felt agents tried to intimidate him.
