Denny Hastert To Announce Resignation–Special Election To Be Called

Memo to Kittytowtie: Take your tums....

Crooks and Liars:

LA Times:

The Roll Call newspaper in Washington reported on its website this evening that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois intends to resign his House seat later this year.

The subscription-only site said Hastert, who had already announced he would not seek reelection in 2008, was calling friends and associates today and telling them of his decision. His early departure would create the need for a special election in his exurban Chicago district, possibly on Illinois’ Feb. 5 presidential primary day.[..]

Three Republicans–Chris Lauzen, Jim Oberweis and Kevin Burns–are already vying for the party’s nomination, while Bill Foster, a wealthy Democrat, appears to lead the waiting Democratic field.

Howie at DWT notes that there hasn’t been a lot of speculation as to why Hastert is leaving….hmmm….In any event, there are an awful lot of Republicans lately reading the writing out of the wall…Kay Bailey Hutchinson has said she’ll be leaving her seat early as well (to run for the Texas governorship).

Lauzen and Oberweis would be nightmares, Lauzen because he is far right and Oberweis because he is far right and knows almost nothing about politics and probably nothing about other countries. He's a millionaire milkman. I think the same guy who ran the campaign for Captain Postcards is running Lauzen's campaign. Burns is a nice guy but as Mayor of Geneva, he is less known and he is not a millionaire like the first two. There's another dude who is a rock and rap record promoter on the Republican side who is getting completely ignored.

For the Democrats, I know nothing about Foster other than he is a scientist at Fermi Lab (I think or maybe Argonne?). He is getting financial backing from his scientist buddies and the Illinois Democrats. Another guy, Lausch (I know that is not spelled right) got 40% of the vote against Hastert the last time but he had really no primary competition. Lasche is a vet (an intelligence analyst) and a nice guy. Basically, Lasche got all the votes against Hastert, people who didn't care who he is other than he is not Hastert. He is not getting the donations like Foster is. I know nothing about Jotham Stein, the other Democrat.

Foster or Lasche might have a chance against Lauzen or the Milkman. The Milkman is just trying to buy his way into politics.

For Jackie--I heard about the Fitz engagement on the local Chicago PBS station last night. They are not ones for hype so I figured it was true and not a wild rumor.
