First on TVNewser: John Seigenthaler's departure from NBC News, announced on the air Sunday, is related to divison-wide budget cutbacks. "He told staff just today that his contract was not renewed. Apparently he's known for 'months,'" a tipster says. The network doesn't have the luxury of a full-time weekend Nightly News anchor anymore. NBC announced "massive cuts" last October, under the "NBC U 2.0" umbrella...
Unfortunately it wasn't an April Fools joke. At the end of Sunday's NBC Nightly News, John Seigenthaler announced that he is leaving the anchor desk. It came as a shock to viewers:
"This is my last broadcast on NBC Nightly News. It's been my privilege to be associated with this news organization for the last 11 years, so a few thank you's are in order.First, thanks to my colleagues, my friends in New York and around the world for their inspiration and support. A special thanks to you the viewers for your loyalty to this network and in particular this broadcast. And thanks to my dear family -- finally, we've got our weekends back. I'm John Seigenthaler, reporting from New York. For all of us at NBC News, good night.
Update:
Minutes after John Siegenthaler said goodbye tonight, a dozen e-mailers wrote to TVNewser asking where he's going. "What is he going to be doing now?," one asked. "Where is he off to?," another asked. An NBC spokesperson says: "We love John Seigenthaler and he's terrific. His contract was up, and he is going to pursue new opportunities."The next question is: "Who will be anchoring Weekend Nightly?" An e-mailer wonders if Campbell Brown or Lester Holt could fill in...

I still hope it's an April fools joke because if it isn't this is a big lost to NBC. Both John and Brian are good choices for leading Nightly News. But I have to have faith. God closes one door an opens another. John will be better and have more then he got at NBC. He should replace Katie Couric maybe CBS news would get higher ratings.
