Death of East Tennessee Marine in Iraq under investigation

By J.J. Stambaugh / Knoxville News Sentinel

Last week's death of a U.S. Marine from East Tennessee who was serving in Iraq is under investigation by the military, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Lance Cpl. Stephen Fitzgerald Dearmon, 21, died Friday "as a result of a nonhostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq," according to a Department of Defense press release.

U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Richard Ulsh of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group said Wednesday that the military is releasing no information on how Dearmon was killed and inquiries for further information on the incident would require a federal Freedom of Information Act request.

"It's under investigation," he said.

The Department of Defense release said Dearmon was from Crossville, but an obituary provided by his family said he was from Knoxville.

His family won't be making public statements or conducting interviews with the media until after his funeral, which will take place Tuesday, according to a representative of Stevens Mortuary in Knoxville.

Bush allowed the Military to drop the background check on those signing up. He allowed prisoners out of jail early if they enlisted. We now have murders, drug users, rapist and other criminals in the US Military.
