Deal reached in Congress: Expand govt powers on wiretapping, grant immunity to telecoms Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress struck a deal on Thursday to overhaul the rules on the government’s wiretapping powers and provide what amounts to legal immunity to the phone companies that took part in President [sic] Bush's warrantless eavesdropping program after the Sept. 11 attacks. The deal, expanding the government's powers in some key respects, would allow intelligence officials to use broad warrants to eavesdrop on foreign targets and conduct emergency wiretaps without court orders on American targets for a week if it is determined important national security information would be lost otherwise... No accountability for the telecoms who were used by the Bush administration. And No Accountability for the Administration who used it for over 5 years. They have the ability to wiretap every single phone, email or cell and did, even before 9/11. And probably will still monitor anyone they like in the United States with or without FISA. The kids in California would say "terrorist, terrorist, terrorist" into the phone and just to get the tape rolling. And then tell them off.
I supported the ACLU's efforts on this, but they were not able to prove any damage to the callers. So much for privacy.
I'm sickened hearing that the Democrats are rolling over on this.
