And how is the Maverick doing in his California gig?

Some cheers and jeers. Sounds like McCain is making sure that the press isn't allowed to certain fundraisers. Here we go.

Let's start with San Diego:

SAN DIEGO – John McCain continued to argue for a longer U.S. presence in Iraq during a brief town hall meeting in Chula Vista Monday afternoon.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said while his potential Democratic rivals want a more immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, he made no apologies for taking what some view as an unpopular stand.

“You may have heard,” McCain said, “a long time ago, people said that my political ambitions were at an end. And I said, that I would much rather lose a campaign than to lose a war.”

McCain said “the essential battleground is in Iraq. I can assure you we are succeeding.”

He was greeted by applause and a standing ovation by about 200 veterans and active military service men and women and their families during the meeting at the VFW Post 2111 in Chula Vista.

There, he briefly talked about improved health care for veterans, the tough economy and climate change before he answered questions from the group.

That wasn't the same earlier in the day.

About 60 demonstrators greeted McCain prior to the Republican presidential candidate's fundraising luncheon at the La Jolla Marriott.

McCain arrived at the hotel shortly after 11:30 a.m. and left about 1:15 p.m. for the town hall meeting in Chula Vista.

The demonstrators outside the hotel were primarily anti-war protesters, though some were members of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council and a local machinists union.

One demonstrator's sign read: “Health care, not warfare.”

Next, Palm Desert:

Arizona Sen. John McCain attended a $2,300-per-person fundraising reception in Palm Desert Monday night in his first trip to California since becoming the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, local reports reported.

The reception, like an earlier fundraising lunch at the La Jolla Marriott, was closed to the news media.

Next, Newport Beach:

NEWPORT BEACH — Republican presidential hopeful John McCain raised about $800,000 at a luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Island Hotel, Assemblyman Van Tran said. The Arizona senator, who is expected to be the Republican candidate this fall, spoke to a group of high-ranking Orange County Republicans at the hotel across the street from Fashion Island. The event was closed to the media.

Protesters from both sides of the ideological spectrum protested McCain's $2,300 per-person fundraiser at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach. Members of AFL-CIO-affiliated unions demonstrated against McCain's stands on economic issues as part of its "McCain Revealed" campaign. A "Stop Illegal Immigration Rally" was also held outside the hotel.

Next, to Bel Air:

BEL AIR, Calif. (AP) It's another boost for John McCain. The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting stopped by Nancy Reagan's Southern California home Tuesday and accepted the former first-lady's endorsement.

Finally to San Francisco where he will be met by his "friends" tonight:

What: Protest McCain Fundraiser
