The US-initiated programme, "Server in the Sky", would take cooperation between the police forces way beyond the current faxing of fingerprints across the Atlantic. Allies in the "war against terror" - the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - have formed a working group, the International Information Consortium, to plan their strategy. Biometric measurements, irises or palm prints as well as fingerprints, and other personal information are likely to be exchanged across the network.
ID cards for foreigners within three years --Phased introduction begins in November --Critics say scheme has been put back. The introduction of compulsory identity cards for foreign nationals in Britain will take at least three years to complete, ministers are to confirm this month. The pilot scheme will be used to test the technology involved in the "biometric residence permits", which will include an electronic record of the applicant's fingerprints.
Edwards's daughter hit by alleged drunk driver (NC) An alleged drunk driver crashed into a car driven by Cate Edwards in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon. Cate Edwards is the older daughter of presidential candidate John Edwards (D). According to Chapel Hill Police investigators, Edwards was driving a 2007 Ford Sedan when she slowed down at a red light and was rear-ended by a woman driving a 1989 Toyota. Officials with the Edwards Campaign say Cate was not injured in the crash and calls the accident "minor".
