JUNEAU, Alaska - A former employer of state Senate candidate Joe Miller is asking why thousands of e-mails went missing when he left the Fairbanks North Star Borough last year.
Miller's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, responded by saying Miller did nothing wrong and questioned the timing of the inquiry, made before the Nov. 2 election and more than a year after Miller had resigned.
Borough attorney Rene Broker said she's trying to find out why e-mails went missing from Miller's inbox when he resigned as a part-time attorney in 2009 and whether he has any public records in his possession. The investigation was first reported by the Alaska Dispatch on Friday.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Broker said about 15,000 e-mails had been recovered through servers. She did not know if there were others but said she hasn't gotten a clear answer from Miller on that.
Broker said she has had e-mails deleted inadvertently but did not know what had happened in this case. She said it's a crime to intentionally delete public records.
