CBS 8 website:
Congressman Bob Filner is proposing a bill that will give military personnel a chance to avoid foreclosure.
Under his plan, banks cannot foreclose on returning veterans for at least one year after they return from duty. Active duty personnel must be offered the best loan modifications available. Disabled vets cannot be foreclosed upon as long as they pay 25 percent of their income.
Filner says it's not right for banks that got bailout money to foreclose on troops when they're fighting a war.
"We say we support our troops, we support our troops. We say when they come home we're gonna take care of them, but how do we let them be foreclosed on. This is a disgrace," said Filner.
Filner will introduce the bill next week when congress returns from recess.
