BEIJING—Citigroup Inc. said Wednesday it plans to nearly triple its work force in China to about 12,000 during the next three years, as part of its strategy to expand rapidly in the country.
The plan is a "reflection of the fact that China is one of our priority markets around the world and we intend to continue to strongly grow our business in China," Citigroup's China spokesman Stephen Thomas said.
Citigroup has 4,500 staff in China out of a total 50,000 in Asia, he said.
Citibank (China) Co., Citigroup's locally incorporated unit, opened its first Smart Banking outlet in Beijing on Wednesday after it opened the first such outlet in China at the People's Square subway station in Shanghai.
