Mary Bale, 45, has become a hate figure after being caught on CCTV dumping four-year-old tabby Lola in its owner’s bin and then closing the lid.
The bank worker, who lives alone in a terraced property in Coventry, was forced into hiding after footage of her callous actions appeared on the internet.
A Facebook page set up by the cat’s owners, Darryl and Stephanie Mann to trace the person responsible, received tens of thousands of followers with many angry cat lovers posting threats against her.
But now Mr and Mrs Mann have appealed for calm and have called for the matter to be dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
The RSPCA have confirmed that they are investigating the matter and will be interviewing Bale.
Mrs Mann, 24, said: “I can't believe the reaction to the story. I only posted it on Facebook because I wanted to see who she was.
“Now that the police know who she is, I think people should leave it to them and the RSPCA and not take matters into their own hands.

When I watched it, it did look like she was being mean. What was the reasoning?
Be careful what you do, you too could end up on the internet.
Lesson learned.
A lot of people aren't buying the woman's excuse that it was a joke. It may have been a joke to her but as you said, the power of the internet.
By the way, the cat Lola, was from an animal shelter according to the pet owners. So, although the cat is fine, throwing any animal in a trash bin like that really shows this woman's character.
