Obama's nomination for Intelligence Director could face heated confirmation process

President Obama announced Saturday morning that he is nominating retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James Clapper, the Pentagon's head of intelligence, to be the new Director of National Intelligence, following the resignation of Dennis Blair. However, Clapper could face a heated confirmation process, in the face of Republican opposition and Democrats who have argued that a civilian should hold the post.

Interesting that the lawmakers want a civilian to hold post. Yet, Dennis Cutler Blair, former DNI, is a retired United States Navy admiral and had no problem being confirmed by the Senate days after Obama took office.  Now John Michael "Mike" McConnell, former DNI under Bush,  is a former vice admiral in the United States Navy. But, Negroponte, the first Director of National Intelligence, (DNI), a newly creative position under Bush, and who was succeeded by McConnell.
