The Justice Department is planning a national search to fill the top post in the Public Integrity Section, whose chief, William Welch II, is returning to Massachusetts as a federal prosecutor there, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said this afternoon.
Welch is taking a post as a prosecutor in Springfield, Mass., where he spent much of his career, his attorney, William Taylor III of Zuckerman Spaeder, said. The Washington Post reported on its web site here that Welch is stepping down as section chief.
Taylor said in a statement that Welch stepped down as the section chief for “family reasons and to pursue professional opportunities on behalf of the United States Department of Justice in Massachusetts.” Breuer, addressing reporters this afternoon at the Justice Department, called the reassignment a “mutual” decision.
