Wow, how sad!
REDLANDS - The Redlands courthouse could soon be as empty as its neighbor, Safety Hall.
A news release Friday by Superior Court officials says the courthouse will be closed as of Oct. 12.
The courthouse has been handling the county's probate cases - cases dealing with the estates and conservatorships of people who have died. Traffic offenders whose violations occurred in or around Redlands also have reported to the courthouse at 216 Brookside Ave.
Judge Larry Allen said San Bernardino Superior Court chose to close the courthouse because of a budget crunch.
Filings for probate cases will move to the Probate Division of the Clerk's office at 303 W. Third St., San Bernardino. All filings for traffic matters will move to the San Bernardino Central Courthouse, 351 N. Arrowhead Ave., San Bernardino.
Redlands Police Cmdr. Tom Fitzmaurice said the plan to close the Redlands courthouse is part of a progression to move more court operations out of the city. The Redlands drug court program used to operate out of the courthouse. Now the program operates out of San Bernardino.
The Police Department doesn't deal much with probate issues, he said. But the department often has officers attend traffic court hearings. After October, those officers will travel to San Bernardino.
