Revealed: Cambridge 911 caller unsure of intruders’ race

If only the media had waited for all of the facts into Professor Gates-Officer Crowley mtter came out before the media ran like gerbils on a story with half of the facts.

The woman who called police after seeing two men who may have been trying to force their way into a Cambridge home was uncertain of their race, though suggested after a dispatcher’s prompting that they could be “Hispanic,” according to audio of the call released today.

The caller said she was not sure about the assessment, only positively identifying them to police as “larger men.”

The audio was released shortly after a Cambridge police department press conference at noon.

In his police report, arresting officer Sergeant James Crowley wrote that the caller “went on to tell me that she observed what appeared to be two black males with backpacks on the porch of Ware Street.”

Attorney Wendy Murphy, who represents the 911 caller, Lucia Whalen, said her client never spoke with arresting officer Sgt. James Crowley at the scene.
“Let me be clear: She never had a conversation with Sgt. Crowley at the scene,” Murphy said,
according to CNN. “And she never said to any police officer or to anybody ‘two black men.’ She never used the word ‘black.’ Period.”

Listen in on the 911 phone call »

Keep in mind that in the police report, it said that the 911 caller saw two black men with a backpack. And now the 911 caller comes forward to explain that she never use the word "black" but "hispanic" in her call to the police? Interesting twist in this story.

Update: Listen to a portion of the police transmission.

On the police dispatch, Gates is called "uncooperative."
