And of course, the swimming club took the kids' money but wouldn't allow them to swim because of their race. Yes, there is still racism in this country despite we have a black President in office.
Update at bottom: US Senator plans probe
A swimming club in suburban Philadelphia called the police on a Fox television crew attempting to report on allegations the club had rejected inner-city children because of the color of their skin.
More than 60 children enrolled in day-care in the basement of a Northeast Philadelphia elementary school were told to pack up and not return, after the Valley Swim Club in Montgomery County accused them of changing the “complexion” and “atmosphere” of the club.
Most of the children enrolled in the day care are black or Hispanic.
When Fox’s Philadelphia affiliate showed up at the club, “we were ordered off, we were told it’s a private club and we’re not welcome,” Fox reporter Claudia Gomez said.
“The banning has caused so much controversy that U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) plans to launch an investigation into the discrimination claim,” MSNBC reports.
The Republican-turned-Democratic senator, who is facing a tough reelection race, released the following statement:
The allegations against the swim club as they are reported are extremely disturbing. I am reaching out to the parties involved to ascertain the facts. Racial discrimination has no place in America today.
MSNBC also reports that the kids found a new place to swim, noting that “the staff at Girard College, a private Philadelphia boarding school for children who live in low-income and single parent homes, stepped in and offered their pool.”
“We had to help,” Girard College director of Admissions Tamara Leclair is quoted as saying. “Every child deserves an incredible summer camp experience.”
