The confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is set to begin in a little more than a month.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced today that the hearing would start on July 13, a Monday. The date is likely to please the Obama administration and Sotomayor's other supporters because it would keep her on track to be confirmed well ahead of the Court's new term in October — and possibly before the Senate leaves town for the August congressional recess. Some Republicans have said they prefer to wait until September for a hearing.
“There is no reason to unduly delay consideration of this well-qualified nominee,” Leahy said in remarks prepared for the Senate floor. “Indeed, given the attacks on her character, there are compelling reasons to proceed even ahead of this schedule. She deserves the earliest opportunity to respond to those attacks.”
