Judge Souter told Leahy of plans in March

Justice David Souter, who announced last week that he would step down from the Supreme Court, privately told Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) of his plans in March, Leahy told reporters Tuesday.

"I had lunch with him a couple months ago, and he told me what he was going to do then," Leahy said. "He and I talked about this a lot during the Bush terms."

Leahy added that Souter had also informed White House officials of his decision well before his official announcement.

Leahy said he and Souter were close, and that the two often discussed personal matters.
