Bird flu vaccine tested on 200 people without their knowledge --They allegedly led their patients, many of them poor and homeless, to believe they were being vaccinated against ordinary flu. Nine health workers went on trial in northern Poland Monday accused of having tested a vaccine against bird flu on nearly 200 patients without their knowledge, court officials said. The accused -- three doctors and six nurses -- are charged with "fraud, creating false documents and delivering health care without authorisation" to 196 patients, judge Piotr Szadkowski of the Torun region told AFP. The medical personnel are charged with administering a vaccine banned in Poland 'against' the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu that can be transmitted to humans.

Stafford Smith had written to the president after judges in the UK ruled against the release of US evidence detailing Mohamed's alleged torture at Guantánamo.

Taliban attempts to target Merkel Suspected Taliban insurgents have attacked a German military base in Afghanistan shortly after a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg said in Berlin on Monday that two missiles were fired at the base in the northern city of Qhunduz 20 minutes after the chancellor left. Merkel paid a surprise visit to Qhunduz on Monday, where 700 German troops are stationed.

AP cuts newspaper rates, moves to protect web news The Associated Press unveiled rate cuts on Monday to help member newspapers reeling from declining advertising revenue and said it would sue websites that use its members' articles without permission. [It's about time!] Changes announced by the AP at its annual meeting in San Diego include $35 million in rate assessment reductions for 2010 on top of $30 million it already instituted for 2009.
