JERUSALEM (AFP) — Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has put the justice minister in charge of defending Israel against charges of war crimes during its 22-day Gaza assault, a government source said Friday.
Daniel Friedman will lead an inter-ministerial team to coordinate a legal defence for civilians and the military, the source said.
And Defence Minister Ehud Barak was also due to ask the government to approve on Sunday a bill "offering moral and legal backing to army officers and soldiers following Operation Cast Lead," his ministry said.
"The Israeli government bore responsibility for sending the Israel Defence Forces (army) commanders and soldiers to protect its citizens and therefore it is obliged to offer full backing to prevent any harm they might be exposed to in view of their inolvement," the statement said.
Israel's military censor has already banned the publication of the identity of the unit leaders who fought against Hamas Islamists in the Gaza Strip for fear they might face war crimes charges.

It's about time the UN held Israel accountable for their many violations. I hope the new administration gives us a balanced policy with Israel, instead of giving their insane government a USA credit card with no limit.
Israel's defense will be the US did the same thing and was never charged. Look Israel with the help of Bush caused the Palestine Holocaust Massacre killing 1300 citizens and injuring 5000. Bush murdered over 1 million Iraq citizen and tortured innocent men/woman/children with nothing done about it. Innocent kidnapped people had been tortured and years later released because it was known they played no part in Al Qeada. Now Americans brush it off as we can do what ever we want. Well those innocent detainees will more likely join a terrorist group.
One child has been held for 7 years while being tortured he's now 21. We tortured one detainees 6 and 9 year old children in front of him to force him to admit to the crimes.
Israel didn't see Palestine people as human beings until yesterday. A famous Doctor who lives in Palestine and works in Israel Hospital. He's so good he was called to operate on Israel's President and it was a success. Israel bombed his house and killed his two daughters as all the people and leaders cried and said they were sorry.
