The first Woolworths branches to end trading in Scotland were due to close for the last time on Saturday.
A total of 17 Scottish branches were closing, with shops in Aberdeen, Ayr, Dundee and Leith among the first to go.
Barring any last-minute rescue, a further 30 stores are due to shut on 29 December and the remaining Scots branches will close on 2 and 5 January.
The chain called in administrators amid mounting debts of £385m. In total, 27,000 UK staff will lose their jobs.
Employees will be entitled to compensation under the statutory redundancy payment scheme and will be retained for a few days following store closures.

After 99 years, wow it made it through the "1st" great depression.
This has been too common, and it's only the middle class stores that are going under. The high end and low end are doing, (I am not going to say well, but they are making it) Toyota posting it's first loss...wow.

And the wealthy Americans and overseas got ripped off by Madoff. So, the victims of this economic crisis and Wall Street bailout and scam are the people who look at themselves in the mirror everyday. This is not just a middle class problem. It is a global problem. Even the wealthy are now doing bargain shopping.
East coast lost Woolworth back in the 70's so I was surprised their still around. Now I guess Wal-Mart will try to full in as stores close.
