California's top court overturns gay marriage ban.

A long waiting for the state...

Read the Decision

SAN FRANCISCO - In a monumental victory for the gay rights movement, the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation's biggest state to tie the knot.

Domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage, the justices ruled 4-3 in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George.

Outside the courthouse, gay marriage supporters cried and cheered as news spread of the decision.

"Our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," the court wrote.More on the story.

Update: However, the court’s ruling “might not stick,” as right-wing organizations “have submitted more than 1.1 million signatures for an initiative that would amend the state Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage. If at least 694,354 signatures are found to be valid, the measure would go on the November ballot and, if approved by voters, would override any court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.”

Update 2: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released this statement: "I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling."

I remember what it was like not to have equal rights so I'll all for gay rights. I couldn't understand why Religious people say God didn't want Blacks to be equal. Never read it in the bible but that was America's reason. What I will never understand is how the Government orders gays to pay taxes but don't give them rights. It's like the slaves working without pay. I just don't understand prejudice anyway.
