He told the troops to keep quiet in voicing their opinions when it comes to the presidential race:
The highest-ranking U.S. military officer has written an unusual open letter to all those in uniform, warning them to stay out of politics as the United States approaches a presidential election in which the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be a central, and certainly divisive, issue.
“Keeping our politics private is a good first step,” he added. “The only things we should be wearing on our sleeves are our military insignia.”
Mullen said he was inspired to write the essay after receiving a constant stream of legitimate, if troubling, questions while visiting U.S. military personnel around the world, including, “What if a Democrat wins?” and, “What will that do to the mission in Iraq?”

Mullins doesn't want another soldier murdered like Pat Tillman who open his mouth. Look the soldiers know if they say anything about who they like or what they think they could be murdered.
Fact I spoke to a Lieutenant and Captain of the US Army behind closed doors and I couldn't get a word in. One wanted Obama and the other wanted Hillary. When I did get a chance to speak I said what about a Republican both men looked at me like I was crazy. Now as the door open with a soldier asking a question the topic quickly ended. Both men said if I said anything they would deny it because you don't talk openly about politics. Yes I asked did they know Bush skipped out when called to serve and if they knew Cheney was a coward who used his wife to get his 5th deferment and both laughed and said something I can't repeat as they said it was their choice words with no disrespect to me.
So our troops know what's really going on and it's their families and friends that keep them up dated. On a side note remember our troops use computers and get the Foreign news which is the correct report not the Pentagon/White House propaganda. Oh and for those soldiers that go on TV to lie for the White House they get a $1,000 bonus for doing that it's a sign up sheet. Most of the troops that do are National Guard as they get low pay and little to no benefits for their families so they need the money.
Now on a side note the Lieutenant who is white is voting for Obama and the Black Captain is voting for Hillary. Some much for color or sex line with our service men/woman.
