Colorado lawmaker defends calling immigrants ‘illiterate peasants.

Here we go..

Thinkprogress:

Yesterday, Colorado state Rep. Douglas Bruce — known for kicking a photographer earlier this year — blasted a proposal to aid migrant farm workers, saying on the state House floor, “We don’t 5,000 more illiterate peasants in the state of Colorado.” Though his speaking privileges were stripped for the rest of the day, he defended his remarks:

“I looked up ‘illiterate’ in the dictionary and it means somebody who is lacking in formal education or is unable to read and write,” he said. “I don’t think these people who are planning to come over here and pick potatoes or peaches are likely to have much of a formal education. I looked up the word ‘peasant.’ The word ‘peasant’ means a person who works in agricultural fields. These people, most of them, don’t speak English. Most of them haven’t had any formal education, that’s why they’re coming over here. I don’t blame them for trying, but I don’t think we should pave the way for more aliens to come here.”

The Denver Post reports that Bruce’s remarks “could leave him with a second censure penalty or worse.”

And this blogger made an excellent point:

Featured Comment: JYD Says: "I am so offended by Bruce and his racism. He knows and I know that Colorado was built and maintained by migrant workers. This whole country was/is built with the blood sweat and tears of migrant workers. I did not hear any complaining about migrant workers as the housing boom was at its peak and the homebuilders and mortgage companies were raking in the money. Who does Bruce think was building all of these beautiful homes?

My Mexican grandfather worked on the railroad, in the Steel Mill and on the farms. He was neither illiterate nor a peasant and neither are those working today. Migrants are only used as scapegoats in tough economic times and thanks to the neocons and their economic 'policies' everyone is looking for a scapegoat."

Memo to Bruce: Better get a reality check on who built or historical buildings in this country, our housing, and so on. Migrant workers who can't speak English doesn't equal illiterates! Every time you eat an apple, strawberry, spinach, or any fruit and vegetable, just remember who worked those farms!

As a reminder:

Denver Post:
Disparaging remarks aimed at migrant workers got resident House rabble-rouser Douglas Bruce banned from speaking on a temporary-worker bill.

“We don’t need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in the state of Colorado,” Bruce, R-Colorado Springs, told the chamber to an audible gasp.
Rep. Kathleen Curry, leading the House at the time, immediately barred Bruce from speaking at the podium, an uncommon maneuver.

“How dare you?” she asked Bruce, before House members moved back to discussion of a bill aimed at helping seasonal farm workers from other countries enter the state legally on a temporary basis.

It is funny how all this talk about immigrants being the problem for what's happen in America. Now not so long ago when Colorado had these same immigrants working for under wages as they picked the crops and built the homes not one person said a word. The Home owners were happy, the State was making money of the backs of the immigrants and even the building companies were smiling all the way to the bank. Not one Colorado Law Maker had a problem until the White House put the US in a recession and has to blame someone.

Now as for immigrants being illiterate let's look at the facts. The slaves were brought from Africa by force to work in America. We have seen Music Artist who don't speak the language but have a God given talent, and many successful people who never spoke English. Now to the peasants well it's an old english term that would mean any small rural town with or without agriculture. Now it just shows how stupid and racist our Law Makers are.
