First up is more news on Efraim Diveroli, the 22 year old who was awarded a $300 million contract to supply arms for US and Afghan troops. Diveroli is under investigation for sending faulty, sub-standard and in some cases, obsolete equipment and it turns out he was awarded this contract on the basis of being a “Small, Disadvantaged Business.” Only problem is, his company was never certified as a SDB, pointing out how easy it is to work around a rather difficult designation to get within the Bush administration.
Next up is National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley’s repeated gaffes on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, confusing “Nepal” for “Tibet” in discussing the protests and controversy over whether George Bush should attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. It’s not exactly comforting that the person tasked with keeping the President advised of what’s happening in the world can’t keep his countries straight, but considering his role in “Treason-gate” it’s not comforting that he even has a job.
And finally, we have Alphonso Jackson, the disgraced and soon-to-be ex HUD Secretary. Being completely unaware and wrong (Jackson predicted an upturn in the housing market and pushed for legislation to encourage risky lending) is nothing new for a Bush administration, but you got to love the chutzpah of a man who calls helping Congress hopeless because there’s “534 massive egos up there” and yet spent $7 million on an auditorium and cafeteria at HUD headquarters, “emergency” bids for oil portraits of Jackson and four other HUD Secretaries, as well as his own taxpayer-funded personal chef.
