The NRCC Lawyers Up.

BLT:

The National Republican Congressional Committee has what could be a
$1 million fire on its hands, and the party has called on Covington & Burling partner Robert Kelner to help douse the flames. Yesterday, party officials accused the former treasurer for the NRCC, Christopher Ward, of funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars, and possibly more, from the organization’s accounts over at least four years.

Kelner, who is the head of Covington’s election and political law practice, is advising the NRCC in the accounting investigation. And he’s no stranger to representing the GOP. He advised the Republican National Committee in its challenge to the McCain-Feingold Act as well as in litigation that arose from a phone-jamming episode in New Hampshire during the 2002 elections.

Ward, the former treasurer, has also lawyered up with a Washington heavyweight. Ronald Machen, a white-collar litigator and partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, is representing Ward in the matter.
