Bush taps Wainstein as new homeland security adviser.

Thinkprogress:

The AP is reporting that this week, President Bush will be appointing Kenneth Wainstein to be his new homeland security adviser, replacing Frances Fragos Townsend. Wainstein currently heads the Justice

Department’s anti-terror efforts and has been a strong supporter of the administration’s wiretapping. At the lavish farewell ceremony for Alberto Gonzales, Wainstein was unabashed in his praise for the loyal Bushie, stating, “He gave us the authority to conduct comprehensive oversight on all aspects of national security investigation.”

UpdateNewsweek reports that the White House had trouble filling this position, repeatedly being rebuffed by top candidates, including Army Gen. John Abizaid. One official "involved in the recruitment process" called it a "
friggin' embarrassment."
