Syria will attend a US-hosted Middle East peace conference but send its deputy foreign minister rather than the country's top diplomat, a source close to the foreign ministry said on Sunday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal "Mekdad will represent Syria officially at the Annapolis," Maryland, conference due to take place on Tuesday, the source told AFP.
Other Arab countries attending the conference, including Saudi Arabia, are sending their foreign ministers.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem had pegged Syria's participation on an agreement by
Washington to include the issue of the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967, on the agenda of the conference.
Mekdad is a former Syrian ambassador to the United Nations.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of the Golan Heights issue, hmm, something to watch.
Yes this will be interesting. Will the guest speak in their native tongue or English. Will the guest be discussing private matters or the subject Bush wants to talk about. I think this meeting will be in favor of the Middle East Leaders and the US will again be left out in the cold. Look most of these guys will be saying is Bush still lying and does he ever tell the truth. Connie will be sucking up for her baby man to help his failed legacy.
