Girlfriday in Turkey.

BLT:
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice arrived in Turkey today. Almost immediately, Turkish officials pressured her to blame Kurdish leaders in Iraq for attacks by the Kurdistan Workers Party (P.K.K.) against Turkish troops. The Kurdish rebels hide in mountains in Iraq, and they have recently targeted Turkish forces. The NYT reports that Rice “took pains” to show her support for Turkey, but continued to advise against a Turkish invasion into Northern Iraq, which is one of the few relatively calm parts remaining in the nation.

Shug is going to flunk this one. The Turkish people are complicated, yet some of the friendliest people on the planet. It is almost out of charater for them to hurt other people but, to explain all that would take a really long time. I have full confidence that Shug will not have a clue how to deal with this situation.

I second that. That's a no brainer.

Yep. It looks like Shug is going to throw the PKK under the bus. Wow, that took fewer than 24 hours to screw up. That sends the message to anyone out there that siding with the U.S. may leave you hanging out to dry just a couple of months later, and that the U.S. cannot be trusted. The PKK does not have the massive oil transport routes that Turkey does. The U.S. cannot afford piss off Turkey but it can throw the PKK under the bus. Turkey has both oil and natural gas pipelines, the Bosporus Strait, and the Sea of Marmara. Everybody on the planet should go to the Sea of Marmara and see 100+ oil tankers crowding the water, as far as the eye can see.
