NEW YORK With President Bush reportedly ready to endorse a full continuation of the "surge" in Iraq through next summer in a speech to the nation tonight, a look back at what he promised in his address last January might prove illuminating, especially concerning "benchmarks."
The president said then, "I've made it clear to the Prime Minister and Iraq's other leaders that America's commitment is not open-ended. If the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people -- and it will lose the support of the Iraqi people. Now is the time to act. The Prime Minister understands this....
"To establish its authority, the Iraqi government plans to take responsibility for security in all of Iraq's provinces by November. To give every Iraqi citizen a stake in the country's economy, Iraq will pass legislation to share oil revenues among all Iraqis. To show that it is committed to delivering a better life, the Iraqi government will spend $10 billion of its own money on reconstruction and infrastructure projects that will create new jobs. To empower local leaders, Iraqis plan to hold provincial elections later this year. And to allow more Iraqis to re-enter their nation's political life, the government will reform de-Baathification laws, and establish a fair process for considering amendments to Iraq's constitution."
None of this happened.
A fact sheet released by the White House at the same time stated:
"The Government of Iraq commits to:
--Reform its cabinet to provide even-handed service delivery.
--Act on promised reconciliation initiatives (oil law, de-Baathification law, Provincial elections).
--Give Coalition and ISF authority to pursue ALL extremists.
--All Iraqi leaders support reconciliation.
--Moderate coalition emerges as strong base of support for unity government."

I really don't know how much of this I will be able to stomach. I may have to bail, because hearing that.....Gerbil in his own words, with all the smirking, chuckling and misspronouciations, I just might have to wait for the print version without all the extra annoyances involved in this propaganda.
Well Bush cleared up a lot of things in his speech.
He will leave all the troops in Iraq and let the next President deal with his mess. As he is only concerned about the oil contacts.
Bush will give jobs to Iraq men and all those who lost their pensions will get them back. All this with taxpayers money.
The US will make sure Iraq is rebuilt and has what they need to have a good life. Oh ya with taxpayers money.
We will make sure Iran and Syria don't get their hands on Iraq.
Bush read a letter from a dead soldiers family because he wanted to counter act the response from the op-ad from the 5 soldiers who told the truth then two of them died.
Bush was honest this time he said he would stay in Iraq and leave this to the next President and all the taxpayers money will go to Iraq no matter how bad off our economy gets. In short you might lose your job and home but your tax dollars will go to Iraq not you.
I listened to Obama afterwards and he will work with Syria and Iran on this Iraq mess. Edwards is right the American people know there is no connection of 9/11 and Iraq.
Guiliani is in la la land thinking we are suceeding and making progress and he speaks of Gen. Petreaus as if he is going to save the day.
Biden was also on and he did a good job of slamming the Gerbil and all the "bizarre" things that he this administration thinks are going to work and what is really going on.
I am no less encourgaged after listening to what the Gerbil said this administration was going to do (he read the words of his boss well off of the telepromter, and had enough coaching on not chuckling and smirking, so his handlers did well). The realitiy is he will reduce the troops to pre-surge levels (which is still to high)and leave this mess for the next administration to deal with.
A good point made by Biden, was he said when he came back from one of his trips to Iraq, he sat down with the Gerbil and said If all Al Qaeda was eliminated, there would still be a Civil war in Iraq.
Interesting I agree with Senator Obama as to talking with countries that don't agree with you. Now if memory serves me right that's what pass great leaders did to end conflict. But of course Bush/Cheney aren't interested in settling any differences they are on a mission to get control of Iraq oil rights at the cost of soldiers lives.
Got caught on the Gerbil show. He basically gave his ass to kiss and leaving the crapola to the next Prez. He just buried his legacy tonight.
