Lucknow,Sept 4 : India's first DNA bank, and second in the world, has been set up in Lucknow to provide identification details of every citizen at the click of a mouse.
IQRA Biotech Services has developed a new system with the help of the Biotech Park in the city, called the DNA Identification System (DIS).Armed with this technology, the bank can now store identification information of any individual.Specifications like a person's name, photograph, contact details, qualification, retina scans, signature, hand writing samples and DNA finger prints will be logged into the computer to make the identification process much easier.
These details will also be transferred to a "chip" that will be issued to the individual, fitted in a "smart card."
"We can transfer all details in to a smart chip. This smart chip can be read through a reader. Also one can read fingerprints through the electronic finger print (system). Through this system a person can be identified within a second," said Syed Ahmad, Director, IQRA Biotech Services.
The system will also need to be boosted by software to operate in full.This data will be provided to those organisations that need the identification details, for example the police department, airports, Intelligence agencies and other organisations of national interest.
In everyday life, this system will prove beneficial to traffic policemen who will be check out the identity of a person within seconds, while standing on the road.
However, Ahmad says the only problem in the system is that it will not be easy to bring in people involved in illegal activities to come to the bank and enroll.
"People who are involved in illegal activities will not get themselves enrolled here. For that we will need the help of the police. Police can help us and we can help police. They cannot escape that way," said Ahmad.As of September 2007, this system is only in use in the United States. India will become the second country in the world to do so if the implementation procedure is carried out smoothly.
The company is planning to hold meetings with various State Governments to educate them on how to use the system and enjoy its benefits.

India is full of technology, medical, technical, and most of our engineering jobs are over there. Yes, American companies set up in India, hire engineers there, sell the work back here at the same price if it was done here, pay a small fraction of what you would pay an engineer here, be it electrical, civil, mechanical, you name it. And we have college grads working at McDonalds, Target etc.
