AMERICA’s elder statesman of finance, Alan Greenspan, has shaken the White House by declaring that the prime motive for the war in Iraq was oil.
In his long-awaited memoir, to be published tomorrow, Greenspan, a Republican whose 18-year tenure as head of the US Federal Reserve was widely admired, will also deliver a stinging critique of President George W Bush’s economic policies.
However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,” he says.
Greenspan, 81, is understood to believe that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the security of oil supplies in the Middle East.
Britain and America have always insisted the war had nothing to do with oil. Bush said the aim was to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction and end Saddam’s support for terrorism.

Greenspan has been around and on the inside to know what is what by now.
Finally someone else but me has said it. All this time it was never about Saddam, WMDs or Iraq Freedom it has always been about the oil. Bush/Cheney were going to invade Iraq long before the 9/11 attack. They planned it out when they were in Texas before the election. It was just a matter of how to do it and when. All these military families keep believing the lies Bush has been saying while all along it's always been about stealing Iraq Oil.
Finally, someone who people will listen to spoke out. For years (and still now) if that guy coughed, Wall Street went into a tailspin.
The first Gulf War was about oil. How stupid are people that they could not figure out the second Gulf War was too, plus some personal revenge on Saddam?
I just saw Alan Greenspan on 60 Minutes and he isn't a happy man. He said Bill Clinton was the best President he worked with and said Hillary would be a good qualified President. Yes Greenspan will be listen to by those who invest and want an honest answer. The man is a brain and he will be needed in the new Administration.
