CHICAGO (AP) - A prosecutor at Chicago's biggest mob trial in years today asked jurors to take the first step toward sending four defendants to prison for life for a series of "brutal and heinous" gangland murders.
Prosecutor Mitchell Mars told jurors there was "no mercy" in the killings as he described the deaths of mobsters Tony "The Ant" Spilotro and his brother.
The jury convicted five alleged Chicago mobsters yesterday of racketeering conspiracy and other charges involving decades of loan sharking, extortion and 18 unsolved killings.
Prosecutors now want the jury to hold 4 of the defendants responsible for specific murders, qualifying them for life sentences.
One by one, Mars described the 18 murders outlined in the indictment and what prosecutors see as the role of each defendant in the deaths.
