Chief Inspector to Head Chicago FBI
Robert D. Grant, currently Chief of the FBI's Inspection Division in Washington, D.C., was recently named by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III to the position of Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office.
The promotion of Mr. Grant, which was made late last year, becomes effective Monday, January 31st, when he is expected to arrive in Chicago.Mr. Grant, age 47, has been the FBI's Chief Inspector for the past year, having responsibility for the audit of FBI offices throughout the world to insure compliance with FBI and Department of Justice rules, policies, and procedures.
Prior to this assignment, Mr. Grant has held a variety of management and supervisory positions in the FBI, including Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (ASAC) of the San Antonio Office. Mr. Grant also served in the Chicago Office as a Supervisory Special Agent from January of 1994 to October of 1998, overseeing squads involved in the investigation of Public Corruption and Health Care Fraud.
A 21 year veteran of the FBI, Mr. Grant began his career as a Special Agent in 1983. His first office of assignment was in Memphis, where he investigated both White Collar and Violent crimes. He also served in the New York Office, where he conducted counter terrorism investigations.As Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI's fourth largest field office, Mr. Grant will direct the investigative efforts of over 800 Special Agents and professional support employees, who are responsible for the enforcement of over 200 violations of federal criminal law within the Northern District of Illinois.
In addition to the Chicago Field Office, located in the Dirksen Federal Building, Mr. Grant will oversee the division's six satellite offices, which are located in Lisle, Rockford, Rolling Meadows, Tinley Park and at Midway and O'Hare airports.Mr. Grant will be succeeding Thomas J. Kneir, who headed the FBI's Chicago Office for three years, until his retirement last October.
Upon learning of Mr. Grant's selection, Mr. Kneir said, "Rob is a bright and energetic young man who is eminently qualified to head one of the finest offices in the FBI. I wish him the best in this challenging and important assignment."Patrick J. Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, also offered his best to Mr. Grant, adding, "We welcome Rob back to Chicago and look forward to working with him. Our office has long enjoyed a great professional relationship with the FBI here in Chicago, and we know firsthand the fine work of Rob from his prior service here. We congratulate him on being selected to lead a great FBI field office."
A native of Virginia, Mr. Grant holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from George Mason University. He is married with two children.

Hi Mr. Kitty is it hot enough for you?
Mr. Grant's background is impressive but with Fitz giving the two thumbs up I'm on board. Now I'm waiting to hear from Randall and that will put Mr. Grant over the top in the trust department. It's gets hard to believe now. I trust Fitz so if he says Mr. Grant is an ok guy that's good enough for me, but I always love hearing Randall's opinion.
