NEW DELHI: The stage is finally set for presidential elections in India after ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government yesterday pulled out 71-year-old governor of Rajasthan Pratibha Patil from its hat to contest the polls. Patil has been chosen UPA's presidential candidate for the elections primarily with an aim to force a split in the opposition ranks.
Pratibha Patil If she wins the election defeating opposition candidate the veteran politician - vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat - in the nationwide polling to be held on July 19 at parliament here and state legislative assemblies, she would be the first woman to become president of India. Patil, a former table-tennis champion, is already credited for being the first and only woman governor of a state in India.
Her candidature was announced by Congress president Sonia Gandhi after consensus emerged within the UPA multiparty amalgamation on her name. The Left parties that had been troubling UPA on the issue of presidential candidature rejected Congress' choice of names like politician Shivraj Patil and veteran academician and foreign policy specialist Dr Karan Singh for India's top constitutional job.
Seems like other countries are embracing women as a President. In other words, some countries are embracing change. While other countries are moving ahead, this country is going backwards thanks to King George.

Well put, we are headed backwards, in so many ways, having US children end up on the UNICEF list......well I could write a book so I will stop here.
I just heard that India has tutoring for 100 per month. Yes and if you have 3 kids it's still 100 a month. The teachers use the internet to tutor the student. Now that's sweet. Yes India will have a woman President that Bush can welcome to the US yet Americans don't feel woman are qualified to be leaders. Karen Huges got paid for doing nothing as she travel the world speading American Woman's Rights. No wonder the world laughs at the United States.
Hindu / Indian countries do much better with women leaders than the U.S. ever will. Srimavo Bandaranaike became prime minister of Sri Lanka back in the early 1960s. Her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, became prime minister in the 1990s and into the 2000s. The daughter dealt with the Tamil Tigers and a civil war. The people thought she would bring peace, and she worked with the Tigers to end the civil war. When the Tigers did not play nicely, she and the military kicked their asses. The Tigers behaved after that. They got noisy again more recently.
India already had Indira Gandhi (Neru's daughter). Except for her fatal flaw in having the military attacking the Sikhs in Amritsar, Gandhi did pretty well. The Philippines had both Corazon Aquino and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Arroyo had some issues with money but she lasted longer than her predacessor, the playboy, who spent too much of the people's tax money on girlfriends. (He makes Duke Cunningham look cheap).
Even Pakistan put up with Benazir Bhutto, the naive lady who brought us the Taliban (no, the enemy of your enemy is not always your friend, duh). She got chased out. The Americans need to remember that when they want their puppet Musharraf to do something. Musharraf is in big trouble after having the Red Mosque stormed.

A huge mess in Pakistan, coming very quickly.
Turkey and Iran work out more cooperation in regards to Iraq. Turkey would love to kick the Kurds out of their country into north Iraq which can't happen enmass with the U.S. still putzing around. Iran wants control of the southern Shi'ite portion. Taking out Saddam was a huge favor for Iran. I think the U.S. was asleep at the wheel about that years ago.

Japan, China, and the Koreas have a long way to go with women as leaders. Thailand could improve. Jobs for women in Thailand include teachers, construction workers (because they make less money), farmers, and prostitutes.
The U.S. has a long way to go, too. Hillary does know more about foreign policy than all of the boys. Too many Americans don't 'get it.' They think of themselves, the stock market, gas prices, and education. Those are OK things to think about but when a country has an excellent foreign policy, gas prices go down so the stock market goes up, military spending goes down, and there is money left over for education.
Duh.
