Two lobbyists also accused of kickback scheme

CHICAGO — The former director of the Illinois Department of Corrections was indicted Thursday on charges he accepted $50,000 in kickbacks from lobbyists for vendors that had contracts with DOC, federal prosecutors said.

Donald Snyder, 52, of Pittsfield served as Corrections director from 1999 to early 2003 under Gov. George Ryan and at the beginning of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s first term.

The indictment grew out of the Operation Safe Road investigation of alleged corruption while Ryan was governor and Illinois secretary of state that led to convictions of Ryan as well as dozens of lower state officials, lobbyists, driving instructors and others, according to U.S. attorney’s office spokesman Randall Samborn.
