“The cash-strapped city of New Orleans is turning to foreign countries for help to rebuild as federal hurricane-recovery dollars remain slow to flow. Kenya Smith, director of intergovernmental relations for Mayor Ray Nagin, said city leaders are talking with more than five countries. He wouldn’t identify the countries, saying discussions were in the early stages. But he said the city is ‘very serious’ about pursuing foreign help.”

Good move. Other States should look at this example. If you have a disaster don't look for FEMA to do anything. Now the Katrina victims and get the help they need. Americans pay taxes but when they need help they have to ask for charity from overseas. As China and the Middle East are now the riches countries in the world maybe Americans should be paying taxes to them.
We've known this for over a year and a half. Did you know that NOLA was offered over $854,000,000 in aid from 150 countries and that less than $40,000,000 was actually accepted? I'd written a lengthy post about it a couple of months ago based on a Wa Po article.

Thank you for visiting my blog and your article that you written. Great article. It is a shame that Nagin has to ask international countries (which was a good move on his part because he knows that you can't depend on FEMA and the gov't) to bail out New Orleans when our country can't and won't (most of the money is being allocated to the Iraq war). That is thanks to the incompetent Gerbil President in office. This country was once the richest country. And now Bush has embarrassed this country so much and pissed off the world leaders that we have to panhandle to other countries for aid.

Since the US children made the UNICEF list those commercials are not on TV, now this, sad state of affairs, we are turning into a third world country that can't take care of itself as China is getting richer and richer, amoung many other countries because we are getting more and more dependant on imports.
