Chairman Waxman Announces Hearing on FDA’s Role in Evaluating Safety of Diabetes Drug


After an article published today in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that Avandia, a diabetes drug, may be associated with an increase in heart attacks and death, Chairman Waxman announced a hearing for June 6, 2007, on FDA’s role in evaluating the drug’s safety. The invited witnesses include the article’s author, Dr. Steven E. Nissen, as well as FDA Commissioner Andrew C. von Eschenbach and Dr. Jean-Pierre Garnier, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, which makes Avandia.
