KHARTOUM, Sudan, May 29 (UPI) -- The Sudanese government sees President George W. Bush's decision to impose new sanctions on Khartoum as an attempt to obstruct peace in Darfur.
A top Sudanese official Tuesday accused the Bush administration of not wanting to see stability in the troubled western region in Sudan. "Every time a peaceful development takes place, (the Bush administration) interferes with an opposite role," said Majdoub al-Khalifa, Sudanese President Omar Bashir's adviser on Darfur.
"The United States does not want peace," al-Khalifa insisted, adding the decision for new sanctions "reveals the American administration's bad intentions."
Bush earlier said that in addition to the new sanctions, he asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to work on a new U.N. Security Council resolution that would impose punitive measures on the Sudanese government for allegedly failing to cooperate with U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur.
