From TalkLeft.com:
Last week I wrote about California prison officials going behind the backs of legislators and authorizing and beginning construction of a new death chamber at San Quentin.
Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued an order halting construction on the project.
Of course, it's not that Arnold is opposed to the death penalty. It's that he wants the project properly budgeted and submitted to the legislature.
Schwarzenegger, a Republican who supports the death penalty, will present a revised budget plan to the legislature next month that will serve as the framework for final budget talks.
But, the Judge who recently found California's execution procedures unconstitutional only gave the state until May 15 to come up with a new plan.
His concerns have put lethal injections in California on hold and threaten to end the procedure in a state that had 664 inmates on death row as of last week. A few have been awaiting execution since the late 1970s. San Quentin's cramped death chamber, built in 1938, was originally designed to gas prisoners.
Update: Law Prof Doug Berman at Sentencing Law and Policy contrasts Schwarzenegger with New York's Governor Eliot Sptizer, with praise for Spitzer.
As detailed in this press release, yesterday Spitzer announced several appointments to the New York State Commission on Sentencing Reform. Spitzer on his own initiative created this Commission last month through Executive Order 10, which calls upon the Commission to "conduct a comprehensive review of New York’s current sentencing structure, sentencing practices, community supervision, and the use of alternatives to incarceration." And not one to waste any time, Spitzer's executive order creates an ambitious agenda and a tight timeline for this Commission's work:

Arnie is trying to position himself for his future as he is looking at what the New York Governor is doing. Right now the Republicans have no leader and after 2008 they will have to rebuild their party. Arnie was to lead that effort. Yes Arnie will use anyone to get to be in Congress or the Senate and have the lobbyist give him money. He's broke and losing money now. He had to sell one of his home and his business is shot. Maria can't get a job and no ones buying her book. Things are ruff for Arnie right now so he looking to the future. He wanted to be President but no one signed the petition.
The numbers keep going up as DNA clears many on death row. But the GOP way is to kill, hunt with guns, execute, support the NRA, pro-NRA everyone should be able to own a gun......Gropinator is just thinking the GOP way. And two deaths in Texas(NASA) where its OK to carry a concealed weapon.
