DHS-ICE: The Arrest of Alleged Terrorist Derrick Shareef is Missing "Something"

By Miguel Contreras, Posted on Sat Dec 9th, 2006 at 03:04:35 AM EST

On December 8, 2006 the arrest of alleged terrorist Derrick Shareef by the FBI-led Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) for trying to blow up a mall in Rockford, IL with explosives caused our main media-stream to pick up on this sensational terrorist plot conducted by the JTTF. After I read the first news story depicting Shareef as being a terrorist and his plot tied to an act of terrorism, my first reaction was, great now DHS-ICE have scored a high profiled case, even if it was one shared with the FBI. As it turns out, Derrick Shareef was acting alone and had no ties to any terrorist group. The writer believes this was only an FBI investigation where not even our DHS-ICE was involved. We don't even know what Shareef's citizenship is.
As curious the writer is since he is a retired career federal law enforcement officer, he queried the websites of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to read their press releases and/or to see pictures of a press conference with our FBI, ICE and other federal agencies' leaders since JTTF is made up of several federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. To this writer's dismay no such information was found. One can only wonder if the so-called JTTF is nothing but an FBI "solo" federal task force operational center.

Since Shareef during his conversations with the FBI undercover operatives discussed weapons of mass destruction, high-powered guns, explosives why was the Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) and ICE were not called in to at least serve as "bag men" for the powerful FBI agency?
Unfortunately, the writer found no information on a Derrick Shareef posted in the websites of

DHS and ICE. Furthermore, the Rockford Police Department (RPD) was not even involved in such investigation until the actual "bust" and this writer assume the RPD was contcated within minutes prior to the arrest only to provide traffic control, security perimeter protection, and back-up in case there was a possible shooting situation.
The Central Intelligence Agency define terrorism as follow:
The Intelligence Community is guided by the definition of terrorism contained in Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d):

—The term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.

—The term “international terrorism” means terrorism involving the territory or the citizens of more than one country.

—The term “terrorist group” means any group that practices, or has significant subgroups that practice, international terrorism.
Terrorism is defined by the U.S. Department of Defense as "the unlawful use of -- or threatened use of -- force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives."
Thus by the above definitions one can conclude that Derrick Shareef was nothing but a common suspected criminal since all of his actions were conducted as an "undercover investigation" where he dealt with FBI operatives acting in undercover capacity. This writer commends the FBI for doing what is expected from them, to protect us from any terrorist attack. However, this writer doubts very much Shareef posed any, and I repeat any national security threat with regards to any act of terrorism. This guy Shareef if examined and evaluated by mental medical professionals would reveal a different person that the FBI tried to portray: a mental examination may conclude that Shareef suffers from some major mental deficiencies, in other words, the FBI dealt with a "nut case."

However, the American people deserve a little more information on Shareef. Why we don't know what his nationality is? If he is a U.S. born citizen why not saying it? One thing is for certain, now that Shareef has been arrested, this writer doubts very much ICE would be involved in the case such as producing Shareef's immigration file (if there is one) if he was born overseas, unless of course, the FBI's director calls Bush and forces ICE to cooperate, since it appears that the only way the ICE leadership agrees to do something is when the agency is ordered and forced to do anything by a court or administrative decree or from the White House.

He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in a complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago, announced Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Mr. Fitzgerald said "While these are very serious charges, at no time was the public in any imminent peril as a result of the defendant's activities."

Both officials noted the charges allege that Shareef was acting alone.
