WHITE PLAINS — Marion Jones, the track and field star who pleaded guilty in October to lying to federal agents about her use of performance-enhancing drugs and her connection to a check-fraud case, was sentenced to six months in prison at the United States District Court here on Friday.
The federal sentencing guidelines recommended Jones face anywhere from zero to six months in prison for her offenses. The maximum she could have faced was five years.
In court filings leading up to the sentencing, prosecutors asked United States District Judge Kenneth M. Karras to give Jones six months in prison; Jones’s lawyers said probation was enough.More on the story.
And I think that the sentence was fair for Ms. Jones. Although Ms. Jones doesn't have criminal records, she did lie to the investigators about her steroid use and then finally admit to using steroids. If Ms. Jones didn't lie to the investigators from the beginning, then I think she would have had probation.
Yes SPB lying to investigators is a crime so is lying under oath but not if your Libby or Gonzales. Our courts have just shown that it's not the crime but the person who committs the crime that get punished. Why is Ms. Jones's lie any different then Libby. Gonzales as lied 71 times under oath but no problem their. Most of the Bush appointees lied no problme there. This is an example of how low our Justice System has fallen.

ReplyDeleteBecause Marion Jones is not a Bush lackey or part of his base. Bush could care less about Ms. Jones and football player Michael Vick. Only the chosen ones that the Gerbil will choose. But, as you said, the judical system is messed up. The justice system wants to make examples of steroid users like Jones and dogfighters like Vick yet Libby and Huckabuck's son skate from their crimes.
I bet if Marion Jones had been a white, male baseball player, she'd be home counting her millions.
